“You
can't learn anything from
experience you're not
having.” - Louis L'Amour
For years, I’ve had an
annual tradition of
gathering with friends at
the end of the year and
sharing our “review –
preview.”
We think back over the
previous year, sharing
memorable experiences and
lessons-learned; and then
look ahead to the new year
to clarify our hopes, dreams
and goals. We always
pinpoint something new we're
going to do so we're
constantly expanding our
repertoire of experiences.
I smiled when I realized
most of my 2009 highlights
were activities I shared
with my sons.
Completing the 2.4 mile
Waikiki Rough Water Swim was
all the sweeter because Tom
and Andrew were there to
share it.
Emceeing TEDx-NASA was even
more memorable because every
time I looked around, there
were the boys connecting
with interesting people like
Loretta Whiteside who
founded Yuri’s Night, VA
Tech robotics expert Dr.
Dennis Hong and brain
scientist Dr. Paul Aravich.
Our 17th (!) Maui-Hawaii
Writers Conference was more
fun because the boys were
there in the presenters
lounge, playing poker,
enjoying the brilliance of
musician Makana (enjoy this
4 minute sampling of his
one-of-a-kind guitar
playing)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BooHm7awVy8&feature=related
and connecting with authors
from around the world
including Pulitzer Prize
winner Ron Powers, Senator
Kennedy’s collaborator on
True Compass.
What do I remember most
about Book Expo in NYC other
than meeting airline pilot
Captain Sully, who spoke
humbly and eloquently about
his emergency landing in the
Hudson? Playing hooky from
the event one day to tour
the Met, hang out at famous
jazz-club Birdland and lunch
at Tavern on the Green with
my sons.
Those experiences were like
having my cake and eating it
too. And it’s a special joy
to see both boys (scratch
that – men!) thriving and
doing work they love. Tom is
now a certified mission
controller at Houston’s
Johnson Space Center and
Andrew is National Director
of the Washington DC office
of Dreams For Kids
www.DreamsForKids.org/dc
My primary goal for 2010?
Transitioning my work into
The Intrigue
Institute - an
educational organization and
online community that
celebrates intriguing ideas,
events, individuals and
organizations and offers
programs, services and
products to help clients
produce intriguing priority
projects that fulfill and
exceed their potential.
I am in the process of
building a
That’s Intriguing
body of work. Click here

to preview the blogs I’ve
been posting about the most
intriguing films, most
intriguing quotes, most
intriguing book titles of
2009, etc. One of my
favorite tips was from
Washington Post movie
critic Ann Hornaday who made
a surprising selection for
top movie of the decade
based on her criteria, “What
movie do I want to watch
over and over again?”
Like to receive the formal
announcement that describes
The Intrigue
Institute’s
programs, products and
services designed to help
individuals and
organizations create more
intriguing projects that
benefit all involved?
Or, would you like an
inspiring keynote or
workshop that keeps your
audience on the edge of
their seats and sends them
out the door motivated to
create a more intriguing
life, business and career?
Contact us at 1 800 SAM-3455
or at

We look forward to finding
out more about your
priorities and discussing
how we can help them fulfill
their potential.

“My
parents always told me I
wouldn’t amount to anything
because I procrastinated so
much. I told ‘em, ‘Just you
wait.” - Judy Tenuta
Are you a member of the
Procrastinators Club? You
know what their motto is?
We’re behind you all the
way.
Are you behind on finishing
your book or a similar goal?
What are you waiting for?
A must-read article for all
authors is
“Resolved: Writing Is a Job”
by Ann Patchett. This
article can be accessed by
clicking on this link
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/12/10/AR2009121003658.html
Patchett reveals her
startling epiphany that
“time spent working equals
output of work. Amazing! I
have long tried to fit my
work in around all my other
obligations. Many days,
writing finds itself low on
the list of things to do,
way below replying to
email…”
Sound familiar?
Patchett also shares a piece
of wisdom that “whatever a
person does with thoughtful
consistency for the first 32
days of the year sets the
course for the entire year.”
She sat down on Jan 1st last
year and started a new
novel. Sure enough, the more
time she spent on the
project, the more pages she
produced.
Now, this may look like an
ABAOTO (A Blazing Attack of
the Obvious) . . . yet how
many of us bemoan an
unfinished project, when, in
reality, we’re the one who
keeps pushing it aside to
handle other priorities?
The good news is, this is
entirely within our power to
change. What is
something you’d like to
achieve by the end of the
year?
Resolve right now that
you’re going to set aside
time to work on it every day
– even if it’s to take 10
minutes to write a page or
study a language. Do the
math. If your goal is to
have a 180 page book, you
can have your first draft
finished by July 1.
You can then have a book
editing party (email us at
Sam@Samhorn.com
if you’d like a copy of the
article I wrote about how to
host one) to receive
on-the-spot feedback from
colleagues who have your
best interests in mind and
at heart.
Take a few weeks to
integrate the edits and
fine-tune your manuscript
and you can turn it into a
Print on Demand publisher by
Sept. 15. If you’ve elected
to self-publish, check out
Book Surge which is
associated with
Amazon.com;
Lulu.com and
Lightning Source. They’re
the POD publishers I hear
the best things about.
They can typeset your
manuscript, help with a
cover and obtain your ISBN
number while you’re
obtaining endorsements,
drafting your jacket copy,
and prepping your outreach
marketing strategies.
Following this schedule, you
can have a finished, quality
book in your hands by the
end of this year and
schedule your celebratory
book-launch over the
holidays.
That is, IF you hold
yourself accountable for
investing the time and work
to make tangible progress
toward your goal on a daily
basis instead of
procrastinating.
Want help holding yourself
accountable for making 2010
the year you finish your
book and get your story or
signature message out to the
world? Want guidance on how
to expedite this process to
ensure that your book is
strategic and will catapult
your reputation, respect as
a topic expert and revenue?
We have several workshops in
the next few months to help
you do just that. Check the
schedule below to see which
program suits your needs and
location.
Whether you’re on the West
Coast and want to kick-start
your project at our
Jan. 24 POP! Your Book,
Business, Brand and Career
program for the Independent
Writers of Southern
California – or on
the East Coast and want to
attend our Book It
Workshop at USA Today
headquarters on May 14 –
we hope to have the
privilege of helping you
make 2010 the year you stop
procrastinating and start
proactively completing your
priority projects.
