“Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple
and learn how to handle them, and pretty
soon you have a dozen.” – John Steinbeck
I remember the first “big” idea I had.
I swam competitively growing up in
California. Upon moving to Hawaii in the
early 80’s, I started competing in Oahu’s
annual 2.4 mile Rough Water Swim held every
Labor Day.
I thoroughly enjoyed training in the ocean
at Ala Moana Beach Park. Then, we moved to a
Waikiki high-rise which had one of those
tiny apartment pools. It was frustrating
getting my daily mile in because the pool
was so small. Stroke, stroke, turn. Stroke,
stroke, turn. It took all the fun out of
swimming.
I woke up one night (by the way, there’s a
reason we often have ideas in the middle of
the night and it’s explained in my
IDEApreneur program) and wondered, “Why not
design a swim leash so you could tie
yourself to the end of the pool and churn
away to your heart’s content without having
to stop and do a flip turn every few
seconds?”
Many serious swimmers stop using their
backyard pools because it’s an “exercise in
frustration” (so to speak) doing laps in
them. The Swim Leash made it possible to
achieve that delightful athletic reverie in
which your mind switches to automatic pilot
and you’re no longer thinking about the
stitch in your side, cramp in your legs or
ache in your arms. Furthermore, the Swim
Leash worked with every stroke, including my
favorite, backstroke. I loved looking up at
the sky (instead of the bottom of the pool),
watching birds fly by and letting my mind
wander while I got a vigorous workout.
After testing the prototype, I went to an
“invention convention” full of hope. . . and
promptly got overwhelmed.
Several experts agreed it was viable, but
told me I’d have to manufacture it overseas
since labor costs in Hawaii were so high.
Plus, they said I’d need to hire a lawyer to
handle the patent process, obtain venture
capital, locate suppliers, etc. Argghh.
I had two small sons (Tom and Andrew, now
college students at VA Tech) and a thriving
business as a professional speaker. Who had
the time or money to fly overseas and put
all this together? I reluctantly concluded I
wasn’t in a position to pursue this and put
the project on the shelf (literally and
figuratively.)
Years later I was flying to keynote a
convention, pulled out a copy of Sky Mall
from the seat pocket in front of me, started
leafing through it . . . and there was “my”
invention. It’s not called a swim leash, but
it’s similar. Oh well, too late for remorse.
The only thing I can do now is to make sure
not to abandon money-making ideas in the
future.
Has this happened to you? Have you come up
with a bright idea, got all excited about
it, started researching it, and then
discovered you didn’t have the resources to
pursue it? Did you start the process only to
get discouraged and distracted along the
way, eventually dropping the project
altogether?
No more.
The internet has changed everything. You can
pursue an idea these days for a fraction of
what it used to cost.
Whether you have an idea for a book, a
business, a product or a service . . . you
can turn it into a profitable reality . . .
in half the time.
I’m offering a program that shows you how to
do just that.
I’ve teamed with John Carter, America’s
Trade the Markets expert to produce a
step-by-step program that shows you how to
turn your ideas into realities that produce
ongoing income.
I met John a couple years ago at the Maui
Writers Conference and was immediately
impressed with his integrity and quiet
brilliance. John is one of those guys who
doesn’t go around TALKING about what he
does, he just does it.
I asked John to speak to my Maui Writers
Retreat group about the money-making
potential of e-commerce. I wanted him to
impress upon them the importance of seeing
themselves as IDEApreneurs . . . . not just
authors. I’ll always remember the stunned
looks on their faces when John walked up to
the front of the room and wrote four figures
on the flip chart in front of the room.
He told us he’d published a book with McGraw
Hill that has sold around 40,000 copies.
(That’s not bad, actually. Did you know that
most books are lucky to sell 10,000 copies?)
Since the book cost $50 retail, that book
has netted McGraw Hill (after expenses)
several hundred thousand dollars.
That book has resulted in a grand total of
$40,000 of income for John. Imagine trying
to earn a living on $40,000 a year. In
actuality, the financial picture for authors
is even more bleak because advances are paid
in thirds: 1/3 upon signing the contract,
1/3 upon receipt of an accepted manuscript,
1/3 upon publication. The book then has to
“earn out” its advance before you earn any
royalties (usually 10% of the retail price)
so this process can span 2-3 years. Believe
me, this can be a Byzantine process.
John is too smart to sit around waiting
for a check to show up from his publisher.
He took responsibility for his own financial
future and created an online empire.
John created a membership website, ancillary
products, coaching programs,
teleconferences, etc. Through his e-commerce
activities (NOT including his lucrative
speaking engagements and private clients),
John generated more than $1 million in
subscriptions and $800,000 in product sales
in the first 8 months of last year.
He did all this while practicing what I call
“Character in Commerce.” John does not have
dollar signs for eyes. You know the type.
The anything-for-a-buck type who think money
is the Holy Grail. Everything they do is
designed to make as much money as possible.
They pressure and manipulate everyone they
encounter to buy, buy, buy – all in order to
line their own pockets. Buyer beware.
John delivers quality, adds value and
delivers substantive, tangible results for
everyone he deals with. Which is why I’ve
decided to align with him. In fact, I’m
thrilled to collaborate with John and his
team because it has become increasingly
evident to me that our future as
entrepreneurs, authors and IDEApreneurs is
in our own hands . . . and it’s online.
I’ve been a professional speaker for 25
years. And I love my work. I’m grateful for
the many opportunities I’ve had to share my
ideas with audiences around the world. But
you can only jump on so many planes. For me
to earn a living means I have to be on the
road somewhere speaking to people.
Which is one of the reasons I love writing.
I get to share my ideas through books,
special reports, newsletters and articles.
They carry my messages around the world,
hopefully making a difference for everyone
who reads them – while I get to stay home,
live a quality life, spend time with my
friends and family, and work on a variety of
other business activities.
I’ve known for the last few years that I
haven’t fully capitalized on the potential
of the internet, and yet I was leery of some
of the “get-rich-quick” schemes that seemed
to promise the moon and not deliver. My
priority is ALWAYS to provide value for my
clients and program participants and I
wanted to make sure that anything I offered
- or was a part of – was a win-win for
everyone involved.
This is it.
Quite simply, this is a fabulous offer.
To learn everything I know on how to become
an IDEApreneur who generates one-of-a-kind,
income-producing ideas – and to learn
everything John and his team know about how
to market and monetize your ideas through a
variety of e-commerce activities -- all for
$97. That’s a real deal.
I promise: John, Hubert, Rosa, Priyanka and
I don't waste time on abstract theories that
don't work in the real world. We all focus
on real-life ideas you can use immediately
to turn the ideas in your head into
rewarding realities that earn you a “good”
living.
