“Opportunity
exists in the air
for just a few
minutes. If you
don’t obey your gut
feeling right away,
you’ve lost your
chance.”
- Ken Hakuta
Be sure to
investigate “tip of
the iceberg” ideas.
Anytime you can’t
stop thinking about
something, it means
an idea wants to be
born. Anything
tickling the edge of
your mind deserves
to be explored.
If I’m working with
clients and they’re
having a hard time
expressing an idea,
I suggest they coax
it out by saying,
“What I mean is . .
. “ or “What I
really want to say
is . . . “
Completing those
sentences often
helps them bypass
the self-conscious
tension that is
tightening their
mental vocal chords.
Instead of trying to
get it “right,” this
gives them
permission to just
say what’s on their
mind - without
criticism - which is
where originality
resides.

“In the long
history of humankind
(and animal kind,
too) those who
learned to
collaborate and
improvise most
effectively have
prevailed.” -
Charles Darwin
In this month’s
issue of Vanity
Fair, a
fascinating article
interviews all the
major online
visionaries in
How The Web Was Won:
An Oral History of
the Internet.
One vignette about
Jeff Bezos, founder
of
Amazon.com,
features a
chuckle-inducing
example which proves
that two heads are
better than one.
Bezos explains,
“When we started
out, we were
packaging books on
our hands and knees
on cement floors.
One of the software
engineers packing
next to me said,
‘This is really
killing my knees and
back.’
I thought about it a
moment and said, ‘I
have a great idea,
we should get
kneepads.’
He looked at me like
I was from Mars and
said, ‘No Jeff,
we should get
packing tables.’
We got packing
tables the next day
and it doubled our
productivity.”
If you want to
double your
productivity or take
your idea to the
next level,
collaborate. By
brainstorming
strategically with
others, you will
almost always end up
with a better result
than if you go solo.
Many clients tell me
that’s one of the
things they love
most about our
weekend writers
retreats. They get
to test-market their
book idea and get
instant feedback as
to its commercial
viability. Then,
they get to develop
a step-by-step plan
for finishing,
publishing and
promoting their book
– while receiving
incisive input from
others.
To find out how you
can
fast-forward a
profitable book
and benefit
from collaborating
with others at our
Chicago Book
Camp, visit
my
website.
We’ll be meeting in
a fabulous, half
million dollar board
room right on
Michigan Avenue
overlooking
Millennium Park.
We’re keeping our
group small so you
receive personalized
attention from Sam
and the group to
make sure your goals
are met.

“I really did
grow up a nerd. In
high school, I
really did have
thick black glasses
taped together. I
really did wear a
plastic pocket
protector. And I
felt left out all
the time.”
So what did this
entrepreneur do? As
an adult, he started
connecting neighbors
online, telling them
about local arts and
technology events.
It quickly became
popular and now
millions of
people use it every
month.

“Under the ruse
of giving an
academic lecture, I
was trying to put
myself in a bottle
that would one day
wash up on the beach
for my children.”
Randy
Pausch,
author of The
Last Lecture
(with Jefrey Zaslow)
Chances are you’ve
heard about Randy
Pausch, a former
professor of
computer science at
Carnegie Mellon.
The “last lecture”
is an academic
tradition in which
professors are
invited to speak to
students is if it’s
the final lecture
they’ll ever give.
In Pausch’s case, it
was because he is in
the final stages of
incurable pancreatic
cancer.
Pausch’s video-taped
presentation spread
like wildfire on
YouTube. He’s
become a nation-wide
sensation with his
book on the
best-seller list for
months and
appearances on Oprah
and all the major
networks.
Why does his message
resonate with so
many people? Well,
Pausch is an
animated, articulate
speaker and his
story is poignantly
timeless. But I
think one of the
primary reasons
people have
responded so
enthusiastically is
because Pausch
speaks passionately
from the heart about
what matters most to
him, about the
legacy he wants to
leave.
One of the most
important lessons
I’ve learned in 20
years of helping
clients communicate
their ideas on the
page, stage, online
and to the media is
how crucial it is to
speak from the head
and
the heart.
Yes, it’s important
to provide practical
how-to’s people can
apply immediately.
It’s equally
important to reach
deep and introduce
from-the-gut-and-soul
revelations that
emotionally
reverberate with our
audience.
Do your blogs,
books, presentations
and interviews take
people on an
emotional ride? Do
you dare to dig deep
and share honestly
about what matters
most to you? Do you
teach (appeal to
intelligence) as
well as touch
(appeal to
emotions)?
That’s one of the
goals of our
Tongue Fu®-Bully
Certification
program. We’re
not content to just
teach HOW to help
people deal with
difficult
situations. We also
spend time sharing
real-life
before-and-after
examples that
showcase WHY it’s so
important to speak
up for yourself and
not let people take
advantage of your
good nature.
One of the reasons
people from all over
the world (England,
Australia, Canada,
United States) have
become certified in
Tongue Fu!® is
because its
techniques are
universal. As
Executive Book
Summaries says
it “it is a gold
mine for anyone
who deals with the
public."
If you’d like the
satisfaction of
being able to teach
an
internationally-respected
program that shows
exactly what to say
and do when someone
is rude, pushy or
aggressive –
contact us for
information about
our 2 day
certification that
is being held in
September.
Whether you are
already a
professional
speaker who
would like to
add this topic
to your
repertoire; a
corporate
trainer who
would like to
offer this
proven program
as part of your
employee
orientations,
customer service
workshops, or
management/supervisory
training; or
looking for a
new, more
satisfying
career getting
paid to do work
you love that
makes a
difference . . .
this program
will be perfect
for you.

testimonials from
some of our grads
who share what it’s
meant to them to be
able to “teach and
touch” audiences
around the world
with these
techniques.
As Sandy
Knudsen, of
Fast-Forward
Communications,
said
"Enrolling in
the Tongue Fu!®
Training
Institute is,
without a doubt,
the best
investment I
have ever made
for myself as a
trainer......The
Tongue Fu!®
philosophies are
principles I
have always
believed in and
Sam Horn has
managed to
organize these
ideas in a
foolproof format
to make it easy
for any trainer
to present them.
